It is safe to say that 2017 was a spectacular year for the partypoker LIVE tour. Massive fields, even larger guarantees and a marvellous time had by everyone who competed at the tables, the 2017 partypoker LIVE tour had it all.
Looking back at the 2017 schedule, which featured tournaments with buy-ins from €110 all the way up to a wallet-damaging $25,500, it is a difficult task to pick out one event as the standout stop on the tour. It is probably unfair to single out a specific event because each and every one of them would be worthy of a special mention in its own right.
That said, the partypoker blog has selected a handful of events from the 2017 partypoker LIVE tour which helped to put the tour on the poker map.
2017 partypoker LIVE tour: Huge Sochi event
The partypoker LIVE tour headed to Sochi, Russia in late March and guaranteed $1 million would be won for a $1,100 buy-in. After 1,170 entries were processed, a $1,134,900 prize pool was created, the lion’s share of which went to Ukraine’s Dmitry Chop who got his hands on a massive $225,000 score after defeating Lev Mnatsakanyan heads-up.
2017 partypoker LIVE tour: Maria becomes a millionaire
Less than a month after the inaugural Sochi event, partypoker LIVE headed to Dusk Till Dawn, Nottingham, United Kingdom for the £5,300 buy-in MILLIONS event, which boasted of a £6 million guaranteed prize pool. Amazingly, the guarantee was beaten when 1,204 players created a £6,017,395 prize pool.
The field was a mixture of online qualifiers and elite poker professionals, one of whom being the eventual champion Maria Lampropulos. The Argentinian was the last player standing and her reward was a potentially life-changing £1 million.
2017 partypoker LIVE tour: Another massive Sochi event
The partypoker LIVE tour returned to Sochi in September for a $5 million guaranteed Main Event. Some 999 players bought in for $5,300.
partypoker LIVE Sochi MILLIONS went down in the record books as the largest poker tournament in CIS history and Aleksandr Gofman is the man who was crowned the tournament’s champion. Gofman collected $1 million after beating David Laka heads-up; Laka banked $600,000 for his runner-up finish.
Earlier in the festival, David Laka won the $10,300 High Roller for $250,000, making his trip to Russia very profitable indeed.
2017 partypoker LIVE tour: Fun in the Caribbean sun
Rounding out the year was the 2017 Caribbean Poker Party and what a festival it turned out to be. With a myriad of off-the-felt activities sandwiched between five stellar events, the 2017 CPP will go down in history as one of the greatest poker events partypoker has run.
Preben Stokkan won the $10,300 MILLIONS High Roller for $275,000 and a couple of days later Rainer Kempe topped a field of 812 entrants in the $1,100 MILLION Open for $200,000.
Chris Hunichen secured the $400,000 first-place prize of the $25,500 MILLIONS Super High Roller on the same day Kempe emerged victorious before Sam Greenwood came out on top of a 1,061-strong field in the $5,300 MILLION Main Event to become the latest poker millionaire created by the partypoker LIVE tour.
The $5,300 MILLIONS Finale was won by Spanish sensation Adrian Mateos who added $250,000 to his lifetime winnings after defeating Team partypoker’s Anatoly Filatov heads-up.
2017 partypoker LIVE tour: Performances of the year
Everyone who won a partypoker LIVE event can consider their performance as being first class, but a couple of examples stand out from the crowd.
Andrej Desset won the €225 partypoker Grand Prix Main Event in Vienna, Austria in April and banked a cool €92,350 after outlasting 2,594 players. A couple of weeks later, Desset entered the €225 partypoker Grand Prix Germany Main Event with 2,888 other opponents and did the unthinkable by winning the event for €100,000!
Desset’s achievements looked hard to beat but one man run hotter than the sun towards the end of the year and caught the eye of the poker world.
Sam Greenwood had a Caribbean Poker Party to remember. The Canadian pro kicked off the festival with a third-place finish in the $10,300 High Roller for $124,100 and followed that up with a runner-up finish in the $25,500 Super High Roller for an additional $242,750. Not content with almost $400,000 in winnings, Greenwood went on to triumph in the $5,300 Main Event for his first seven-figure score, a cool $1 million.
Mike Sexton, partypoker President, stated that he didn’t think Greenwood’s week would ever be beaten it was that tremendous.
