He has travelled the world playing in the highest buy-in tournaments and cash games, taken on and beaten some of poker’s most feared players, and has won more than $11.7 million from live events. We are, of course, talking about the one and only Igor Kurganov.
Kurganov is the latest stellar name to confirm their attendance at the upcoming Caribbean Poker Party, joining the likes of Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Marcel Luske, and Dzmitry Urbanovich for some fun and poker in the sun.
After cutting his teeth in the online poker world, and with great success, Kurganov turned his attention to bossing around opponents in the live arena. Back in November 2009, Kurganov recorded his first live victory, a €330 no-limit hold’em side event in Portugal for an €8,391 score.
These days, Kurganov doesn’t think twice about buying into tournaments with buy-ins 10 times more than that first win.
Less than two years after that relatively small victory, Kurganov enjoyed his first six-figure score when he finished second in a €10,300 buy-in tournament in Madrid, netting €123,000, then a couple of months later he won £318,300 by being the runner-up in a High Roller event in London that cost £20,500 to enter.
On year later, Kurganov won a €25.500 8-Max High Roller in Monte Carlo for his first seven-figure score, one worth €1,080,000 before eclipsing that massive prize by being the third-place finisher in a €100,000 buy-in Super High Roller in Monte Carlo in 2014 for what is a career-best haul of €1,128,300.
When he isn’t busy hoovering up chips at the poker table, and winning ridiculous sums of money, Kurganov tries to help others less fortunate than himself by being an ambassador and being on the board of the R.E.G – Raising for Effective Giving – charity. Members of R.E.G. donate at least two percent of their income to the charity on a quarterly basis.
The charity granted almost $100,000 in unrestricted donations in the first half of 2016, and close to $600,000 in 2015. He may be philanthropic, but don’t expect Kurganov to give you any special treatment if you sit with him in Punta Cana, take it from us he will be doing everything in his power to take your chips and head towards another huge cash haul.
