The WPT Micro Main Event Championship got off to a flying start on August 29 and it was Russia’s Sergey Ponkratyev who was the star who shone the brightest.

A bumper crowd of 4,097-players took to the partypoker tables in the first of two starting flights; the second shuffles up and deals at 20:00 CEST on August 30. Of that massive opening flight, only 686 players managed to make it through to Day 2 at the first time of asking.

Pontkratyev finished Day 1A with a tournament-leading stack of 5,494,967 chips. There’s still a long, long way to go before this massive event crowns its champion but Pontkratyev has done his chances of glory no harm at all by being lightning fast out of the blocks.

Canada’s Duff Jeanfrancois bagged up 5,081,268 chips at the close of play and was the only other player to finish with more than five million betting tokens.

Plenty of established professionals and household names also progressed from Day 1A. These included Team partypoker’s Matthew Staples (2,163,635) and Renato Nomura (948,095), Guy Taylor (2,003,359), Marty Mathis (1,375,781), Stuart Fox (981,608), Dean Clay (623,720), Paul Vas Nunes (542,626), Bryan Paris (501,270), and Dominik Nitsche (268,182),.

Of course, this means hundreds of entrants fell by the wayside on Day 1A. They do have another shot at glory in Day 1B at 20:00 CEST on August 30.

We’d expect the likes of Team partypoker’s Louise Butler, Philipp Gruissem and Carl Froch, Ben Farrell, and Charlie Combes to take another bite at the cherry on Day 1B.

You could be joining a whole host of poker stars at the tables by entering Day 1B. $109 is all it costs to be in with a chance of sharing a $1 million guaranteed prize pool. Everyone sits down with 200,000 chips and plays to a 20-minute clock where blinds start at 500/1,000/125a.

There are several Micro Main Event Mega Sats running throughout August 30 that start at only $3.30. Follow in the footsteps of Daniel Smyth and Andrey Kotelinikov and turn a satellite victory into a World Poker Tour World Online Championship title.
