Jolle Moene Wins Star-Studded WPT Montreal 6-Max High Roller

Dutch grinder Jelle Moene finished second in a WPTDeepStack event in Amsterdam in 2019 and was bitterly disappointed not to take it down. He made amends on January 28 when he finished first in the WPT Montreal 6-Max High Roller event.

The $5,200 buy-in attracted 49 players, a compact field but one brimming with quality. Team partypoker duo Patrick Leonard and Kristen Bicknell busted before the money place, as did such luminaries as Jans Arends, Sam Greenwood, Artur Martirosian, Elio Fox, Dario Sammartino, and Claas Segebrecht.

Adrian Mateos burst the money bubble

Spanish superstar Adrian Mateos was the unfortunate soul who burst the money bubble. Mateos’ exit in 10th place meant he walked away empty-handed while the surviving nine players locked in at least $10,875.

Giuseppe Iadisernia and Shawn Daniels fell in ninth and eighth-place respectively, setting the seven-handed final table.

Mike Watson ran out of steam and had to make do with a seventh-place finish worth $12,005. British star Phil Mighall was the next player out of the door, falling in sixth for $13,949. Mighall turns on the style for these major online events having won the WPTWOC Main Event in September 2020, a result that saw his bankroll explode with a $1.550.298 prize.

Fifth-place and $16,650 went to Barry Hutter who was joined on the rail by Finnish pro Sami Kelopuro, the latter banking $22,489.

Heads-up was set when Roberto Romanello fell by the wayside in third for $32,436. This left Stephen Chidwick and Moene heads-up for the title and almost a difference I of $31,000 in prize money.

The neutral poker fan would have put money on Chidwick taking the tournament down from this position thanks to his incredible record and the fact he has more than $40 million in career cashes. It wasn’t to be, however, as Moene caused a major upset and won the 6-Max High Roller, banking $80,891 in the process and leaving Chidwick to console himself with a $49,736 runner-up prize.

Daniel Rankin Wins 7-Max Turbo PKO

Dan Rankin became a WPT champion when he triumphed in the 7-Max Turbo PKO. Rankin is better known in online poker circles as “DatWillDoPig” and this result will definitely more than do.

Rankin collected a combined prize worth $9,845 for his victory. Some $6,174 of that prize stemmed from the bounties Rankin collected on his way to his impressive victory. Part of those bounties were on the head of Jiri John of the Czech Republic who crashed out in second-place.

Thomas Clucas Crowned WPT Montreal Mini Main Event Champion

Jack Hardcastle won the WPT Montreal Main Event for the United Kingdom and now Thomas Clucas has won the Micro Main Event. Rule Britannia!

Some 1,624 players bought into the Micro Main Event over the course of two starting flights and Clucas outshone them all to become a WPT champion. All 242 players who made it through to Day 2 found themselves in the money place, doubling their initial investment to $65.58.

All but three of the partypoker players who navigated their way to the final table saw a four-figure prize hit their accounts. Canadian duo Joshua Gravel and Harry Chaimowiz were the final table’s first casualties. They won $597 and $762 respectively. Stefan Lehner’s exit in seventh saw him walk away with $961.

The first four-figure haul was reeled in by Tristan Bergeron whose tournament ended in a sixth-place finish worth $1,235. Simone Natale ($1,612) and Samuel Roussy-Majeau ($2,365) followed suit before Bojan Pavlovic crashed out in third-place for $3,583, leaving only Josef Peterek and Clucas in the hunt for the title of champion and the $7,686 that came with victory.

Clucas managed to brush aside his Czech opponent to secure the top prize and all the glory. Peterek can be happy with his performance and the $5,241 he won for his runner-up finish will go some way to numbing the pain of defeat.

What’s Coming Up On The WPT Montreal Schedule?

There is plenty of action coming up this weekend if you want to get involved in the WPT Montreal shenanigans.

Day 1A of the $530 buy-in $250,000 guaranteed Playground Closer shuffles up and deals at 19:05 GMT on January 29 with the $162 buy-in $20,000 guaranteed 7-Max Turbo starting at 22:05 GMT.

Day 1B of the Playground Closer kicks off at the same time as Day 1A but on January 30 with Day 1C scheduled for the slightly earlier time of 16:05 GMT on January 31. That earlier start time is because Day 2 begins at 20:05 GMT on January 31.

One tournament not to be missed is the Mike Sexton Classic Mega Sat. This starts at 15:30 GMT on January 31 and has 20x $10,300 seats guaranteed. Of course, feeder satellites for this Mea Sat are available.
