The 2020 Irish Poker Masters festival kicks off online at partypoker on December 4 and we think it would be fantastic is its Main Event was won by an Irish player. Call us old romantics if you will, but an Irish champion in the Irish Poker Masters Main Event would be pretty cool, wouldn’t it?

Ireland has produced some superb poker players over the years and we expect some of the biggest stars from the Emerald Isle to head to the partypoker tables during the Irish Poker Masters.

You’ll find five of the best Irish poker tournament players below, which do you think stands the best chance of enjoying some Irish Poker Masters glory?

Dara O’Kearney

Dara O’Kearney

Everyone in the poker world has heard the name Dara O’Kearney, although you may know him better as simply “Doke”. O’Kearney is widely regarded as the king of satellites but he’s so much more than that.

He’s racked up more than $3.1 million in online poker tournament winnings and an additional $1.1 million in the live arena. His largest score weighs in at $262,502, his reward for a runner-up finish in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em event at the 2015 World Series of Poker.

If O’Kearney enters the Irish Poker Masters Main Event, he’s going to be one to carefully watch.

Marc MacDonnell

Marc MacDonnell

Marc MacDonnell, “sluglife” to his friends, is a phenomenal poker tournament player, one with almost $1.1 million in online winnings and another $3.08 million from live event. That second sum places him fourth in Ireland’s all-time money listings.

MacDonnell has a knack of pulling at least one large score out of the bag each and every year. He definitely did that in 2018 when he finished third in the Caribbean Poker Party Main Event for a cool $1 million. Only Craig Mason and Filipe Oliveira, the latter being the champion, outlasted MacDonnell on that occasion.

Louise Butler

Louise Butler

No list of Irish stars would be complete without our very own Louise Butler being on it. The Galway girl has accumulated just shy of $700,000 in online poker tournament winnings with more than $320,000 of that total stemming from partypoker tournaments.

Butler’s biggest online cash weighs in at $29,896 thanks to a runner-up finish in a $200,000 guaranteed event. We’d imagine a deep run in the Irish Poker Masters Main Event would blow that prize out of the water.

Eoghan O’Dea

Eoghan O’Dea

Eoghan O’Dea, son of Irish legend Donnacha O’Dea has more than $3.2 million in poker tournament winnings, enough for third place in the Irish all-time money list.

O’Dea knows how to turn on the style in poker’s biggest events having recorded two sixth-place finishes in the $10,000 PLO 8-handed Championship at the 2017 and 2019 WSOP.

You may recall O’Dea reached the final table of the 2011 WSOP Main Event where fell in sixth for a career-best $1,720,831. He finally got his hands on a bracelet this year when he took down a $400 PLO event online.

O’Dea may excel in Pot Limit Omaha games but he’s no novice when it comes to No-Limit Hold’em.

Kevin Killeen

Kevin Killeen

Kevin “SuitedAcesBaby” Killeen has a superb record in Irish tournaments having won a €770 Main Event in Dublin in 2014 for €87,700 and a runner-up finish in the 2015 Irish Poker Open for €192,500. While the Irish Poker Masters isn’t taking place in the Emerald Isle, we’re not writing off Killeen’s chance of glory.

The popular Irishman has a shade over $1 million in live poker tournament winnings and an additional $3.57 million online. Amazingly, Killeen’s impressive online sum has come without a prize over $50,000. Perhaps he’ll change that fact in the coming weeks.
