The WPT World Online Championships (WPTWOC) Main Event kicked off on August 30, and it got off to a flying start. Some 390 players bought in before late registration slammed shut, but only 59 of those starters managed to progress to Day 2.

There is a familiar name at the top of the chip counts, a player who we are used to seeing leading major tournament. That player is, of course, Andras Nemeth.

WPTWOC Main Event Day 1A Top 10 Chip Counts

Place Player Country Chips
1 Andras Nemeth Hungary 4,047,290
2 Steven Van Zadelhoff Malta 3,766,152
3 Luja Plenkovic Croatia 3,416,465
4 Christopher Frank Austria 3,405,224
5 Manuel Fritz Austria 3,117,876
6 Espen Jorstad United Kingdom 2,840,391
7 Timo Kamphues Austria 2,757,045
8 Kristian Zitting Finland 2,430,762
9 Vadim Rata Moldova 2,361,876
10 Alexander Staffan Anders Ivarsson Sweden 2,357,848

Nemeth excelled on Day 1A of the $5 million guaranteed WPTWOC Main Event, turning his 200,000 starting stack into a tournament-leading 4,047,290. The Hungarian superstar was the only player to finish with more than four million chips.

The chip leader is no stranger to success at partypoker. Nemeth won the Irish Open High Roller in April for €33,688, and more recently secured the title of champion in The Grand, a result that padded his bankroll with $44,152.

Steven Van Zadelhoff is another elite player who will be happy with how their WPTWOC Main Event flight went. The Malta-based Dutch grinder finished Day 1A with 3,766,152 chips, enough for second place.

Others who finished the Main Event’s opening flight with a top 10 stack include Christopher Frank (3,405,224), Espen Jorstad (2,840,391), and Timo Kamphues (2,757,045). Frank already has a WPT title to his name courtesy of winning the 2014 WPT Vienna National Main Event.

Big Names Make It Safely Through

Jeff Gross

Jeff Gross

Plenty of household names litter punched their Day 2 tickets at the first time of asking. Pedro Garagnani (2,1341,233), Adrian Mateos (1,380,495), Team partypoker’s Jeff Gross (1,297,904), Upeshka Da Silva (619,904), Faraz Jaka (506,433), and former MILLIONS Online champion Benjamin Chalot (294,322) among them.

Win Your Way Into Day 1B of the WPTWOC Main Event

Day 1B of the WPTWOC Main Event gets underway at 19:05 BST on September 5. It will set you back $5,300 if you buy in directly, but there are dozens of satellites feeding into this massive tournament.

WPTWOC Main Event satellites are phased, meaning you can play your way into the weekly final from a mere $0.01. That final, which runs each Sunday, has 50x $5,300 seats guaranteed.

Alexandru Baron Leads Mini Main Event

The only thing mini about the WPTWOC Mini Main Event is its name because the $1,050 buy-in tournament has a whopping $1 million guaranteed prize pool. Some $336,000 of that sum is already collected thanks to 336 players buying into Day 1A on August 29.

Fifty of those starters progressed to Day 2, with Alexandru Baron finishing on top of the pile with a 4,853,183 stack.

As you would expect from a $1,050 buy-in tournament, dozens of stellar names bought in, and many are now guaranteed a return on their investment.

Sami Kelopuro (3,495,002) has enough chips for third place right now, with Faraz Jaka (2,631,951) and Pascal Hartmann (2,601,269) boasting of top ten stack. Sam Greenwood (2,271,946) is lurking just outside the top ten. Dzmitry Urbanovich (928,669), Simon Mattsson (794,045), Ivan Zufic (522,604), and Anton Suarez (335,135) among them.

McConkey Claims WPTWOC Micro Main Event Lead

Day Kotoviezy

Day Kotoviezy

Canada’s Justin McConkey not only bagged himself the WPTWOC Micro Main Event chip lead on Day 1A but did so in some style. McConkey sat down with 200,000 chips like the other 651 players who bought in for $109, but he somehow managed to turn those chips into a stack of 5,246,168 by the time only 15% of the field remained!

To put things into perspective, Claas Stood finished second in chips with 3,431,813, more than two million chips less than McConkey!

The lure of the WPTWOC was strong in this event, even though it is one of the more affordable tournaments. It drew in such luminaries as Steven Van Zadelhoff (3,095,558), Ivan Zufic (2,320,574), Renato Nomura (2,005,401), Team partypoker’s Matthew Staples (1,587,220) and Day Kotoviezy (775,524), Marton Czuczor (606,593), and Ben Dobson (342,644).
