In 2013, Chris Moorman became the first-ever online poker tournament player to surpass $10 million in winnings. A significant chunk of that impressive figure were won at partypoker and on Sunday he added a further $27,400 to his partypoker total when he won the $200k Guaranteed Sunday event! And he was more than happy:
Just finished my 18 hour grind today with a win in the Party Major to complete my 20th triple Crown #winning
— Chris Moorman (@Moorman1) February 3, 2014
Moorman, playing as Therealmoorm, went into the final table second in chips and the writing was already on the wall for his other eight opponents then; Moorman does not lose tournaments when he has a substantial stack. We caught up with him to hear his thoughts at this point:
“I was shortstacked for a lot of the tournament once we got itm but managed to get very lucky a couple of times with 2/3 tables left to run up a stack. Once I had the big stack things went more smoothly and I felt confident about taking it down from there.”
Here’s how the nine finalists lined up:
partypoker $200K Guaranteed Sunday Final Table Seat Draw (February 2, 2014)
Seat | Player | Chips |
---|---|---|
1 | kleiner_fisch | 575,025 |
2 | Therealmoorm | 968,497 |
3 | phil_ivey68 | 759,529 |
4 | H0meb0iz | 1,396,580 |
5 | HanneLind | 33,324 |
6 | stevie_np | 644,485 |
7 | johnjohn0509 | 207,636 |
8 | MML01 | 157,342 |
9 | KrillleR | 534,082 |
Blinds: 7,500/15,000/750a
With only two big blinds at his disposal going into the finale, it was unsurprising to see HanneLind become the first casualty of the final table. phil_ivey68 — who is not the real Phil Ivey incase you were wondering! – opened to 30,000 on the button, HanneLind called all-in from the small blind and stevie_np called from the big blind. Stevie_np checked th flop, phil_ivey68 bet 59,608 and stevie_np folded, leaving phil_ivey68’s to stay ahead and beat the of HanneLind.
They say the number 13 is unlucky for some and it certainly was for johnjohn0509 who crashed out of the tournament 13 hands after HanneLind busted. Johnjohn0509 moved all-in for 126,636 chips with and was looked up by kleiner_fisch on the button who held . It was one of poker’s classic races, but also one that was almost over as quickly as it had begun because the took away some outs for johnjohn0509 as any club would have improved kleiner_fisch to a flush. The turn and river failed to alter the hand and johnjohn0509 exited in eighth place.
Four hands later and MML01 joined the busted players on the sidelines. H0mb0iz opened the betting with a raise to 30,000 from the cutoff seat, a bet that was three-bet all-in to 95,092 by MML01 in the small blind. H0meb0iz called with and found himself up against the superior . By the river the board read to gift H0mb0iz an unlikely straight and to send MML01 home for the proverbial early bath.
Six became five with the elimination of phil_ivey68 by eventual champion Moorman. KrillleR opened to 40,000 from the cutoff, Moorman three-bet to 105,000 from the small blind, only to see phil_ivey68 four-bet all-in for 393,652 in total. KrillleR had seen enough and relinquished his hand, but Moorman had the in front of him and had an easy call to make. And make it he did to discover he was ahead of the of his all-in opponent. The board left Moorman’s hand best and the final table lost another player.
Moorman Continues to Crush
A short while later and Moorman claimed another scalp; this time he sent stevie_np to the rail. After opening to 50,000 on the button, Moorman called when stevie_np moved all-in for 172,161 from the big blind. Stevie_np showed , Moorman the , which got there on the river of the four-flushed ] board.
There was a lull in the eliminations for a priod of 39 hands before Moorman min-raised to 60,000 from under-the-gun and then called when kleiner_fisch three-bet jammed for 377,019 from the big blind. Kleiner_fisch’s needed some help from the five community cards to overtake the that was in Moorman’s hand, but that help never arrived. Moorman paired his ace on the flop and then turned trips to bust kleiner_fisch in fourth place.
Moorman’s rampage continued as he took the tournament life of KrillleR. Moorman opened to 60,000 and Krilller called from the big blind. The flop was initially checked by Krilller, then bet to the tune of 52,400 by Moorman and then check-raised to 129,999 by KrillleR. But that was not the end of the action because Moorman made it 245,000 to play, KrillleR raised to 385,555 and Moorman settled for a call. The turn was greeted with a 260,000 bet from KrillleR and a call from Moorman. KrillleR then pushed all-in for 653,822 on the river and Moorman called, turning over as he did so. Moorman had got extremely fortunate because KrillleR held and had flopped a set of fours!
That hand left Moorman with 3,474,894 chips to H0meb0iz’s 1,814,106 yet it still took exactly 50 hands of one-on-one poker to end the tournament. On the 50th hand Moorman raise to 80,000 with , H0meb0iz three-bet all-in for 773,441 with and Moorman called. Neither player’s holding improved on the board, Moorman’s ace-kicker being more than enough to bust H0meb0iz in second place and leave Moorman to add yet another major online poker tournament title to his already impressive list of results.
