In November 2014, as the WPT500 UK was in full swing at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, one of boxing’s greats greeted us with his presence and swapped his gloves for chips.
Carl Froch MBE, nicknamed “The Cobra,” headed to Dusk Till Dawn (DTD) to show his support for such a prestigious event being played in his home city. Froch failed to reach the money places on that occasion, but last week made up for it by staging a superb comeback to knockout DTD owner, Rob Yong.
Before you get too excited, Froch didn’t literally knockout Yong as he has to 24 of his opponents in the ring, he knocked him out in the poker sense. You see, Froch was at DTD to compete in the new Beat The Boss promotion that sees players have the opportunity to play an eight-handed £10,000 guaranteed live final where Yong is one of the opponents and where everyone wins at least £300 and the champion scoops £3,500 and has bragging rights, which are priceless!
Froch, famed for his lethal right hand, swapped power for finesse and it reaped dividends as he found himself heads-up against Robert Taylor for the title.
“To make it that far was an achievement itself,” said Froch to the Nottingham Post.
After a tense one-on-one battle, Froch beat YTaylor and sent him to the rail, claiming his first major live tournament win in the process.
“I was so chuffed to go on and win it,” continued Froch. “I was knocked out of a tournament two weeks ago, but I was determined not to be beaten. I love a challenge as I do in boxing so the Beat The Boss tournament was something which appealed straight away.”
According to the Nottingham Post, Froch has played poker for several years although it is only recently that he has started to take the game more seriously and put some hours into learning the nuances of this amazing game.
“It gets the adrenaline going and is so competitive. It’s the psychological aspect of the game which is really fascinating.”
Froch turned 38-years old today (July 2) and last fought in May 2014 when he beat fellow Brit George Groves for a second time. There are rumours that Froch may hang up his gloves for good and not fight again, if this is true we’re sure that we’ll see the boxing legend at DTD and at partypoker events in the future. You have been warned!
Do you want to beat the boss?
You too could be playing against Rob Yong for a share of £10,000 – you never know, Carl Froch may just make an appearance. All you need to do is compete in the DTD Tickets tournaments and win a $120 ticket, or buy into the Daily Beat The Boss @ DTD tournament that runs at 8:00pm BST from July 6. Win that tournament and you’ll be invited to DTD to play the live final where everyone at the eight-handed table is guaranteed a prize.
