At the start of the week, poker players poured into the Montesino casino in the heart of Austria beautiful capital city of Vienna, each with the dream of becoming the WPT National Vienna Main Event champion.
By the time shutters at the registration desk slammed shut halfway through Day 1b, 375 players had exchanged €1,100 for a chance to chase that aforementioned dream, a dream that is still alive for a mere eight players.
At 13:30 CET (12:30BST) those eight finalists return to their seats for the last time this week safe in the knowledge they have secured at least €10,180 for their efforts so far, but one of them is going to be lifting the coveted WPT National trophy and receiving an oversized cheque for a cool €77,000. Leading the way going into the final day’s play is Christopher Frank with 3,705,000 chips, almost double the amount of any of his rivals. Frank is a talented tournament poker player, one with more than $408,783 in live tournament winnings and is most definitely the favourite going into the final table.
Although Frank is in pole position, the other seven final have reached the final table on merit and will not be giving up without a fight.
Local player Gereon Sowa has 1,815,000 chips as play resumes and is arguably Frank’s biggest threat, although Greece’s Konstantinos Alexiou (1,460,000) and Tonio Roder (1,160,000) will also be biting at the heels of the chip leader.
Rounding out the final table, but not there to simply make up the numbers, are Hands-Joachim Hein (930,000), Fabian GritschM/strong> (925,000), Severin Kock (685,000) and Dietrich Fast (570,000).
