If you want a shot at a large lightning quick return for investing a little then join me in playing the partypoker Pokerfest Micro Turbo Series. Buy-ins range from $1 to $50 with the $20 Main Event with $25,000 guaranteed taking place at 14.00 ET on Sunday 1st June.
I love mixing in turbo tournaments to my schedule and below are some tips from me that can help you get an edge on the competition. Remember, that whilst the action might be fast and furious the basic fundamental principles of poker remain exactly the same. Good luck, see you at the tables!
#1 Don’t Over Adjust
Many players over adjust to the quicker structure of turbos and are intent on trying to get chips as soon as possible. If you find players of this nature at your table be prepared to call them wider than you usually would as they’ll be shoving a weaker range of hands.
#2 Don’t Change Your ‘Default’
There’s no need to change your default approach to a poker tournament just because it’s a turbo. At all times your stack size and those of your opponent’s should dictate how you play, with the structure a secondary consideration. Whilst turbos will always play shallower than a deepstacked, slow structured event there is plenty of play to be had early on.
#3 Is The Average 20 big blinds or less? Watch out!
Once the average stack drops to 20 big blinds or less you need to be careful with the hands you open pre-flop. Most stacks will be perfect for three-bet shoving so you need to be careful that you’re not raising and folding to shoves too often as not only will you be burning a decent percentage of your stack but you may also be making a mathematical mistake by raising and then folding to a short stacks shoves.
#4 Check Your Range
The accepted wisdom is that once you get to 15 big blinds or less then simply open shoving your stack is usually preferable to min-raising, especially if antes are in play. However in turbos, everyone will have that stack so, especially once you get deep, min raising will usually achieve the exact same thing. This is because no one can really afford to call and see a flop this shallow so they’re playing shove or fold poker. So you can raise/call your good hands and raise/fold if you need to. Just be sure you’re playing the top of your range the same way as the bottom of your range.
#5 Independent Chip Model
ICM sure it’s not the most interesting of poker concepts but in turbos at final tables where the pay jumps really matter you need to be aware of how ICM should affect your decisions.
#6 Door Meet Ego….
Don’t be afraid to deal! Even if you think you have an edge on your opponent’s it’s hard to outplay your opponent’s if they’re all-in. The situation in poker can change very quickly. Check your ego at the door.
And there we have it! What did I miss, let me know in the comments below!
