This is the one you’ve been waiting for – the partypoker MILLIONS. It’s a £5m guaranteed prize pool with at least £1m going to the winner. It’s the brainchild of Rob Yong (owner of Dusk Till Dawn) and this guy thinks BIG! He puts out guarantees that are ‘wowing’ and this one takes the cake.
As you may or may not know, partypoker was launched on August 1, 2001 with only one-table satellites. There were no cash games, no other tournaments, only one-table $22 buy-in qualifying satellites for the partypoker Million (PPM), where the table winner would advance to the semi-finals held nearly six months later. At the semi-finals of the PPM, 100 players won a luxurious cruise for two, got $500 in cash, and played in a poker tournament where the winner would get $1m. The idea of the PPM was to create a ‘wow’ factor in the poker world and develop a loyal player base. It surely did that.
When we launched partypoker, the WPT had not yet been created and Limit Hold’em was the primary game played in all poker rooms. This was the first (and only time to my knowledge) that there was $1m guaranteed to the winner of a Limit Hold’em tournament. That winner turned out to be Kathy Liebert.
Needless to say, as the creator of the original PPM, I am thrilled and delighted to see the return of the partypoker MILLIONS – and it’s far bigger this time around! The finals will take place at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, England April 20-23, 2017. That will be for Days 3-4-5-6.
