Qualified!
Maybe it’s not a bad thing to be a hated man. Certainly it’s not bad if you’re Tony G, cocooned in a health farm in New Zealand while the Internet is abuzz with your latest exploits and your rising star. He’s the name on the tip of every poker fan’s tongue, and why not?
If you watched the Big Game you saw Tony G at his best as he needled Daniel Negreanu, dismantled Phil Hellmuth, and called the clock on Andrew Robl before them all on their bikes. Tony was nothing short of terrible and awesome in equal parts. But he holds no grudges against Robl, and in my interview with him went as far as to say, “Robl, you’ve passed the test. You are now qualified!”

Robl has passed with flying colors
And maybe that’s what the Big Game was for Andrew Robl. If it was a test of character, the young high stakes poker player has passed with flying colors. Peer pressured to straddle, ganged up on by Tony G and Daniel Negreanu, and abused by the half of the Internet that’s not applauding him for showing backbone. Or the character of a nit. It all depends on who you ask. But that’s what makes great TV poker these days.
You’ve got second pair with a decent kicker, and the maniac on your left has just made a double pot bet for fifty thousand large. The table captain is telling you you’ll never be invited back, while the maniac is asking for the clock. You’ve volunteered to stick 100,000 dollars of your own money in this game, and are now being humiliated on TV. It’s not all Dom Perignon and bottle service at Pure. But this is the life that you’ve chosen.
And when you look to your left at Tony G, between bouts of invective laced fury you can see the faintest of smiles creeping across his face. Bear in mind, life is supposed to be fun. And part of the magic that is the larger than life countenance of the G, is that he never forgets it.
