Jesse May has been talking with Jennifer Tilly and Phil Laak in the commentary booth where he stated that he thinks 18 points will be enough to claim one of the top 5 spots.
Using May’s prediction, we can deduce that Jonathan Duhamel (27) and Daniel “Jungleman” Cates (18) should be safely through, even if they pick up the dreaded nil-points. Daniel Negreanu (14) and Sam Trickett (13) would need to finish fourth or higher while Marvin Rettenmaier (11) and Phil Hellmuth (10) would need to finish in the top three in this heat.
Again, according to May, last year’s Premier League champion Scott Seiver (4) and Antonio Esfandiari (3) will be history unless they take down this third heat.
The way the points are set up create an interesting dynamic because Esfandiari and Seiver are either going to go hell for leather and try to accumulate chips or they are going to try and ladder their way up the standings. Negreanu, Trickett and Rettenmaier have the most to lose, so we would expect them to be the cagier of the octet.
