In poker, being under the gun is one of the worst positions to find yourself in. You’re first to act preflop and are likely to be the first player to act once the first three community cards land on the felt, which puts you under some serious pressure and at a massive disadvantage. But for the first two weeks of September, being under the gun at partypoker gives you the chance to win a share of $14,000, and that can never be a bad thing!
With the launch of the new promotion, we thought it would be fun to add four famous poker scenes or situations where the players had to compete under extreme pressure – and a couple that were literally under the gun.
Let us know if we missed your favourite.
The final scene from Rounders
It’s amazing to think that Rounders came out a full seven years before the so-called Moneymaker Boom and I can only imagine the reach it would have had if it was released after the former accountant’s famous victory.
We love Rounders here at partypoker, but our favourite hand in it has to be the final one where Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) has everything and more on the line in a hand against the psychotic Russian mobster Teddy “KGB” (John Malkovich).
If you haven’t seen Rounders, don’t watch this video below because it contains the final hand of the movie!
The Cincinnati Kid finale
Released in 1965, The Cincinnati Kid follows a player nicknamed The Cincinnati Kid (played by Steve McQueen) who travels around 1930s New Orleans playing stud for high stakes. Towards the end of the film, “The Kid,” gets a little out of his depth and finds himself heads-up against the legendary card-sharp Lancey Howard (Edward G. Robinson) and playing for massive stakes, talk about being in a pressure cooker!
James Bond Casino Royale
If being James Bond wasn’t high enough pressure for any man to take, in the 2006 edition of Casino Royale, Bond (Daniel Craig) has to defeat the arms dealer Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen) in a ultra-high stakes cash game, putting him truly under the gun.
First, this hand happens:
With this being the final hand:
Wild Bill Hickok
The name James Butler Hickok, or Wild Bill Hickok, may not mean much to you, but he is one of the few poker players to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame – he’s been there since 1979.
Hickok was a lawman, gunfighter and gambler born in 1837 and who died 39-years later in 1876. It is how he died that made one poker hand famous and gave it a name that is still used today.
On August 2, 1876, Hickok was playing a game of stud at the Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota. The only seat available in the game was one that saw Hickok have his back facing the door, something that made Hickok uncomfortable, but when two other players refused to swap seat, he got on with the task in a hand.
During the game, unknown to Hickok, Jack “Crooked Nose Jack” McCall entered the saloon and approached Hickok. Standing a few feet away, McCall shot Hickok at point blank range, hitting Hickok in the back of the head and killing him instantly.
Hickok held [Xx] in his hand at the time of his untimely death and aces-and-eights has forever been known as “Dead man’s hand.”
