A very interesting poker tournament took place at London’s Loose Cannon Poker Club on Sunday 6th June as a warm up to the World Cup starting on Friday.
Poker Player magazine organised the Poker Player World Cup of Poker sponsored by PartyPoker.
The Loose Cannon is London’s largest independent poker club and it is located in the heart of the city, next to Cannon Street Station.
A private qualifier tournament for Poker Player Magazine readers was played at PartyPoker’s online tables and 32 players (28 online qualifiers and 4 Poker Player staff members) got their seats to the Poker Player World Cup of Poker event.
The prize pool for the event was at $3,500.
Players assigned a World Cup team to represent
An interesting twist to this poker event was that each of the 32 players was assigned a World Cup team to represent. The teams were drawn at random and players were asked to dress in something that represents the football nation they are playing as.
There was a spot prize on the day for the best fancy dress costume. There were also bounties on the heads of 4 Poker Player magazine employees.
Starting stacks were at 5,000 and levels were 25 mins. First to depart from the tables was our representative from North Korea.
Algeria showed up a bit late with a great excuse – flew in from WSOP in Vegas after cashing in one of the $1,000 no-limit events. He won $5,600 finishing 73rd of 5345 runners in total.
Serbia showed up representing the headmaster (sir as in Ser in Serbia) and a bunch of beer cans around his neck (beer as in Bia in Serbia). Very creative!
Cue71 takes it for the Netherlands
PartyPoker’s Cue71 won the event, 2 PartyPoker shirts for knocking out Poker Player employees and the $1,300 in the prize pool.
Cue71 travelled all the way from Liverpool to be at the Loose Cannon poker club at Cannon Street in London.
Now it is up to the Netherlands to match his results at the football World Cup.
