In sport, like in poker, sometimes everything clicks into place and greatness is achieved, unprecedented greatness on some occasions. There have been several dozen teams that have dominated their sport during the history of sport, but the partypoker blog has selected five of the greatest sports teams from around the world who we think stand out from the crowd.
Manchester United, 1998-99
As an avid Leeds United fan I had to endure the constant gloating of Manchester United fans during the 1998-99 season. To be fair, those who support the boys from Old Trafford had every reason to be cheerful because they had arguably one of the greatest football teams to have ever played the game
They only lost five times across all competitions and won the Premier League title, the FA Cup and claimed the Champions League trophy, too. Oh and their then manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, was knighted! It was their free-flowing, attacking football and never say die attitude that helped this team achieve what it did.
A team featuring the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Gary Neville, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, a certain David Beckham, Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham was always going to succeed, which is exactly what it did.
Chicago Bulls, 1995-96
This team is officially the greatest-ever in NBA history thanks to something called the Elo rating, but even without that, there are few people who would argue this team is the best thanks to them winning 72 games during regular season and losing only 10.
They had the best average points per game, the top offensive rating in the league and the best defensive rating.
Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen and Dennis Rodman all became cult heroes even on this side of the pond as youngsters scrambled to choose The Bulls when playing the hit video game, NBA Jam, and were solely responsible for the influx of Chicago Bulls clothing being sported by all and sundry in the UK.
Miami Dolphins, 1972
In 1972, the Miami Dolphins did something that no team in the NFL had done before or has managed since: win every single game it played. After finishing with a 14-0 record in regular season, the Dolphins won their three post season games including Super Bowl VII after beating Washington Redskins, to finish the season 17-0.
The New England Patriots team of 2007 won all 16 of its regular season games, but lost Super Bowl XLII to finish their season 18-1 so also deserve a mention here.
New York Yankees, 1927 season
During the 1927 season, New York Yankees’ 25th anniversary, the team finished with a record of 110-44, breaking the previous record of number of wins by five and finishing 19 games clear of the Philadelphia Athletics.
The 1927 Yankees has one of the most-feared lineups in history, one nicknamed “Murderers Row” that included the two legendary figures of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, the former hitting a record 60 home runs during a single season.
New Zealand Rugby Team 2011-onwards
The All Blacks are undoubtedly the best rugby union side of the professional era. Since winning the Rugby World Cup in 2011, New Zealand have only lost two Tests and drawn two, which is a phenomenal record.
New Zealand are the only team to have a winning record against ever other nation, and have won 406 of their 531 Test matches, a record of 76.46%. They are the clear favourites via our sports betting site (that you can access through the partypoker client) for the upcoming Rugby World Cup.
