Recognisable faces from the worlds of poker and beyond continue to get involved in Shooting Stars for Charity, with a list of new players confirmed to take part.
Shooting Stars for Charity is part of the schedule for the inaugural WPT World Online Championships, and will be held across two days, from Wednesday, July 29, 2020, to Thursday, July 30, 2020. The minimum guarantee for the tournament will be $500,000 and there will be a minimum $50,000 charity donation from the prize pool. Whenever a Shooting Star is knocked out, the player who eliminates them will win a $500 bounty.
The tournament buy-in is $1,100, with $100 from each buy-in being donated to 1Day Sooner, a charity that advocates on behalf of human trial challenges to speed up development of a COVID-19 vaccine. The charity has gained the support of more than 32,000 volunteers across 140 countries.
Several big-name poker professionals had already agreed to play, including Team partypoker’s Sam Trickett, former WPT champion Ryan Riess and actress and model Aylar Lie, who has won six live poker titles.
The number of pros playing the tournament continues to expand, with the latest entrants including Darren Elias, who has previously notched up a record four WPT Main Event wins; Liv Boeree, who has won close to $4 million in live tournament earnings; Kenny Hallaert, one of Belgium’s highest ever poker earners, winning more than $4.3 million in prize money; and Mike McDonald, winner of a High Roller event in a partypoker MILLION North America event in 2017.
Boeree said: “I’m dusting off the ol’ clicker (my gaming mouse) to play some online poker again for the first time in ages for partypoker’s WPT World Online Championships series. Who knows, maybe I’ll nail that triple crown at last.”
The new additions to the Shooting Stars list also include famous faces from outside poker. He may not have quite managed to make it into first place in Love Island earlier this year, but Luke Mabbott will be hoping to go a few steps further this time.
Barry Hearn knows a thing or two about staging high-profile events, and the Chairman of World Snooker and sporting events promoter this time puts himself in the spotlight to compete in the tournament.
Actor Patrick Murray will also be participating. Many know him as Mickey Pearce from sitcom Only Fools and Horses, but he is also a handy poker player.
They join the previously announced former Manchester United footballers Wes Brown and Darren Fletcher, who will aim to bring their winning mentality to the tournament, having won several major trophies, including the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
The tournament will be live-streamed on partypokerTV – partypoker’s Twitch channel. Commentary will be provided in English by James Dempsey and Henry Kilbane, in Russian by Dmitry Shakov and Andrey Budykin and in German by Stefan Hachmeister and Christophe Gross.
The WPT World Online Championships are running until Wednesday, September 9, paying out a minimum guarantee of $100,000,000. The series is designed to replicate an authentic live poker experience. Players’ real names will be used at the tables and there will be a maximum of two Day 1s for the 12 championship events in the series, with a maximum of one re-entry allowed. Five of the 12 championship event winners will be entered into the WPT Champions Club.
