The plan for Day 3 of the partypoker World Poker Tour (WPT) National UK London Main Event seemed ambitious at best: whittle the 164 players down towards the final table. Some thought the floor staff of the Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford City had lost the plot when they suggested such a feat was achievable, but their experience shone through as only 13 players had chips in front of them as the curtain came down on Day 2’s play.
Each of the 13 players who return to their seats on Sunday will do so safe in the knowledge that they have each locked up a payout of at least £1,210, which isn’t a bad result for a couple of day’s work. However, with a final table appearance being worth £2,030 and a massive £20,250 reserved for the tournament’s champion, none of the players will be happy to pick up that amount.
Leading the way going into Day 3 is John Ventre and his colossal stack containing chips worth 2,243,000. Ventre has one previous cash to his name, a 26th place finish in a €1,000 tournament in Barcelona back in 2011. That particular result banked Ventre €2,500, an amount he will beat if he finishes eighth or higher in this spectacular event.
The only other player to bag up a seven-figure stack was Michael Chaffe from Dartford. Chaffe has won almost $25,000 in 2013 and is now looking to win even more in the WPT National UK London Main Event. Chaffe starts Day 3 with 1,496,000 chips.
