Daniel Negreanu: When Tony G plays, it is his game…

Posted by Jesse May in Jesse May on September 23, 2010

“When Tony G plays, it is his game…” That’s what Daniel Negreanu admitted when I asked him about Sir G’s comments regarding playing The Big Game in Las Vegas.

Even though the show was conceived by Daniel Negreanu, Tony G’s personality dominates. I ran into Daniel at the Empire Casino in London this week during the WSOP Europe.

But who didn’t I run into this week at the WSOPE?

Jumping up and down like little kids

There was a great scene around the bar when they announced the draw for the WSOPE 10k Heads Up tournament.

The big names were jumping up and down like little kids, waiting to see who they would play.

And every fixture was a marquee matchup.

The rail was thick with fans, craning to catch glimpses of Negreanu, Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, and Phil Hellmuth. Sam Trickett was treating the opportunity to play the best player in the world like an early Christmas present. But why wouldn’t he? Trickett has been the hottest player in Europe over the last few months, and here was his chance to test himself in the ultimate poker game.

Singing, chanting, and plenty of flowing drinks

Speaking of Phil Ivey, JP Kelly was up on center stage trying to make history by besting Phil Ivey’s record of being the youngest player in poker history to win three WSOP bracelets. For all the talk of the up and coming Brits in the poker world, don’t leave JP Kelly’s name off any list.

He’s quiet, unassuming, and plays the game at a level that would have you shudder. You only have to look at who was on the rail cheering him on to realize what esteem his peers hold him in, and how well he is liked on the scene. Praz Bansi, James Akenhead, and Jeff Kimber were leading the chants for JP to take the bracelet, but he was head up with an up and coming Brit who had a mammoth cheering section of his own.

There was much singing, chanting, and plenty of flowing drinks. This is what the World Series of Poker Europe is supposed to be about. And the main event hasn’t even kicked off yet. London Poker can only get better.
