There was plenty of action in the WPT Online Series over the weekend with some massive prizes won. The $5 million guaranteed WPT Online Series Championship also kicked off with the first of four starting flights.
WPT #15 – Weekender Final Day: $500K Gtd
The $1,050 Weekender’s final day took place on May 10 and saw the 125 players who made it through from the start days fight it out for a slice of the $979,000 pie. Only 104 of those returning players banked some cash with Croatia’s Ivan Zufic bursting the money bubble.
The likes of Alex Foxen, Simon Mattsson, Sylvain Loosli, Toby Lewis, David Peters, and Team partypoker’s Roberto Romanello made it into the money. As did Mark Radoja, Scott Margereson, Simon Deadman, Steven Van Zadelhoff, and Ankush Mandavia.
Each of the eight finalists guaranteed themselves a $14,293 payday. This is the sum Javier Zarco banked when he fell in eighth place. Jens Lakemeier, Stefan Schillhabe, and Manig Loeser were the next casualties, the latter securing a $39,943 payday.
Fourth-place and $56,586 went to Frederik Andersson before Morocco’s Sonny Franco saw his tournament end in third, a finish worth $83,508.
Franco’s exit set up a mouth-watering clash between Tyler Goatcher of the United Kingdom and Niklas Astedt of Sweden. Goatcher enjoyed a super-impressive POWERFEST by winning three titles. He couldn’t quite get the job done this time against the world’s number one online poker tournament player.
Goatcher had to settle for the $124,333 second-place prize, which left Astedt to add another $174,751 to his lifetime winnings.
WPT #15 – Mini Weekender Final Day: $200K Gtd
The Mini Weekender was anything but mini with a $409,500 prize pool created despite the guarantee being $200,000.
Canada’s Matthew Wilkins was the main beneficiary of this massive pot as he was the last man standing. His rewards? $63,285 for his $109 investment. Wilkins secured this prize after busting Brazil’s Julio Fantin heads-up. The Brazilian walked away with $44,348.
This victory was made all the more sweeter for Wilkins as it avenged some demons from February. Wilkin made it all the way to third-place in the C$1,100 WPT Fallsview event and won C$105,262 but narrowly missed out on a WPT title. Now he has one to his name plus a decent chunk of cash to boot.
WPT #21 – Mix-Max Turbo Bounty: $300K Gtd
A star-studded final table was assembled in the WPT #21 – Mix-Max Turbo Bounty: $300K Gtd and Russia’s Viktor Ustimov was the man who got his hands on the lion’s share of the $326,000 prize pool.
Ustimov won $26,909 for his first-place finish and an additional $35,195 worth of bounty payments. Ustimov defeated Swedish star Robin Berggren heads-up for the title. The Swedish runner-up won $28,751 with bounties included.
Shoutouts to the British duo Simon Deadman and Luke Reeves who finished in fourth and third-place respectively. Deadman saw his bankroll swell by $15,669 with Reeves reeling in $24,404 in total.
WPT #20 – WPT Online Championship Day 1A: $5M Gtd
The WPT Online Championship kicked off with the first of four flights and saw 808 players exchange $3,200 for the chance to win this incredible event. This means $2,424,000 of the $5 million guarantee has already been collected.
Netherlands’ Abdelhakim Zoufri is the man to catch after the conclusion of Day 1A. He finished the night with 791,877 chips in front of him. Canada’s Kevin Macdonald is second in chips right now thanks to his 668,081 stack.
Plenty of well-known, household names punched their Day 2 tickets. Keep an eye out for such luminaries as Benny Glaser (548,623), Guillaume Nolet (443,152), Simon Higgins (436,550), and Timothy Adams (374,556) in the chip counts.
Also through are David Kitai (330,311), Michael Addamo (288,534), and Artur Martiosian (254,734).
Josip Simunic (258,040) built the biggest stack of the Team partypoker. The Austrian’s team-mates Ludovic Geilich, Patrick Leonard, Jeff Gross, Roberto Romanello, Joni Jouhkimainen, Isaac Haxton, Jaime Staples, and Dzmitry Urbanovich will all need to fire another bullet if they’re to win this massive event.
