It’s a beautiful thing when a city comes to life. And it gets even better when the stars align to create the perfect storm of activity and atmosphere. Mix that with a little ‘ain’t no place like spring in Montreal’, and you’ve really got something.
Close To A Religion
The sport of hockey is king in Canada, and Montreal’s home team, the Canadiens, come as close as you can get to religion in sport. When the Canadiens make the playoffs, the city of Montreal electrifies in a spectacular way. There’s a shared happiness that’s truly fun to behold. Jerseys everywhere, and every conversation has a little hockey in it.
But there’s another hot button being pushed right now in Montreal, and that button say’s ‘DEALER’ on it. Poker is also a religion in Canada, and right now the faithful are gathering again in Quebec to worship at the altar of the World Poker Tour. Conversations that start with hockey end up with bad beat stories, as another huge crowd has swarmed The Playground Poker Club to take a run at a WPT title and the life changing money that goes along with it.
4 Years Later…
Last November saw the triumphant return of the WPT to Canada after an absence of four years with a record setting field of 1173 players. The appetite for poker ran so deep that the WPT put TWO stops on the Canadian poker schedule for 2013. A televised event in November promises to be another huge moment in Canadian poker.
But this week, eyes are all on the WPT Canadian Spring Championships, a non-televised event back on the familiar grounds of The Playground Poker Club. 3 Day Ones are on the sched for another big field. And no shortage of familiar faces in the poker room either. Phil Laak, Mike Sexton, Gavin Smith, Kara Scott, Jeff Gross, Jeff Madsen, Joe Serock and scores of other well known players are on hand to take a shot at a WPT title.
It really is perfect. The sun is shining. The hockey playoffs are on. And the WPT is back in town. It’s a great day to be in Montreal.
