Imagine turning $5.50 into a package to the Caribbean Poker Party worth a cool $8,000. That is exactly what 56-year-old Canadian Jean Guy Boyer did last week, and as you can imagine, he is over the moon with joy.
Jean lives in Quebec with his girlfriend of nine-years, and began playing poker approximately six-years ago when he was recuperating after an accident at work. Since discovering this amazing game, Jean has won his way to several major live events for a fraction of their cost, including the WPT Montreal National Main Event where he navigated his way to a 79th place finish worth $2,511.
Over the years, Jean’s girlfriend has been a big influence on his progression as a player – Jean says she has more poker knowledge than he – but his development has also been aided by watching WPT on the television, and seeing fellow Canadian Jonathan Duhamel, and Pascal Lefrancois win WSOP bracelets.
Due to possessing a small bankroll, Jean bought into a $5.50 Phase One Caribbean Poker Party satellite, and was cruising until he was eliminated by a bad beat. Not to be put off by his poor luck, Jean bought into another $5.50 buy-in satellite, made it through to the final with 360,000 chips. The rest, as they say, is history because Jean played some excellent, patient poker, and secured himself a package worth $8,000!
“I was enjoying a lot of good cards, but patience was the key,” said Jean, who revealed he was playing a small ball style throughout the final.
When the tournament ended and Jean received the congratulatory pop-up on his screen, he had done the unthinkable and won his way to Punta Cana from a $5.50 tournament, something he felt he was going to do throughout the day of his epic victory.
“Securing the package was awesome, a dream come true! My girlfriend and her daughter watched me play my way to the package, and were screaming with excitement! I knew all day that today was the day; I knew I had the potential to make it through.”
Jean plans to take his long-term girlfriend with him to Punta Cana and says “with a $5.50 buy-in tournament you can make your dreams come true!”
