The second of three starting flights in the £200 buy-in partypoker World Poker Tour (WPT) National UK London Main Event took place on Friday afternoon and what a superb day of poker it was.
By the time the registration desk at Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford City pulled its shutter down and the last player was registered, the screens around the plush poker room read “156 Entries,” meaning 344 players have bought in over the first two starting flights, creating a prize pool that currently stands at £61,920.
Over the course of eight 30-minute levels, those 156 starters were whittled down to a more manageable 72, with James Thompson accumulating more chips than anyone else on Flight 2. Thompson had the welcomed problem of trying to fit 162,500 chips into his overnight chip bag, some 15,600 more than second placed Catalin Cesuc.
Those of you who tuned into the partypoker blog on Friday morning and read our recap of Flight 1’s action will no doubt have seen the name of Catalin Cesuc in the top 10 chip counts. Cesuc ended Flight 1 with 102,500 chips, enough for fifth place on the leader board. Cesuc took advantage of the unique accumulator format of this tournament, bought into Flight 2 and finished it with 146,900. This means Cesuc takes 249,400 chips through to Day 2 – possibly more if Cesuc enters Flight 3 and progresses.
Although Cesuc’s Day 2 stack is massive, it is still smaller than that of Ivars Muiznieks. Aspers informed the partypoker blog that Muiznieks, who played on Flight 1, missed a zero from his chip bag and actually accumulated 268,000 chips and not 26,800! This means Muiznieks is the overall chip leader of the tournament so far.
