Scott Baumstein talks poker tips and the “golden age of partypoker”

1). How did you get started playing poker and who were some of your mentors?

I started playing small kitchen table (we used a pool table) games with my friends in college at the University of Colorado, Boulder. My biggest influences were definitely Mike Sexton and the WPT on TV which led me to try my hand at some small tournaments in Blackhawk, Colorado after class ($40-$300) and I won outright 3 of the first 5 tournaments I had ever played (things weren’t always that easy). I then opened an account on partypoker in 2004 during what has since been referred to as the “golden age” and played exclusively on partypoker through 2006 until UIGEA.

2). Besides the free drinks, how does playing poker online differ from playing live?

To me, being in the comfort of my own home has to be the biggest advantage of online poker. In terms of the actual game, you can see more hands and play more tables at once creating an unparalleled volume of hands which can’t be matched in the live arena. In live poker, however the stakes are generally greater and you have more information in which to base your decision.

3). Do you have any superstitions or rituals you follow when preparing to play poker tournaments?

I’m not a very superstitious guy, but I would say the single most important thing for me is getting enough sleep. That combined with the a light breakfast and in an ideal world something physical like a quick run.

4). What’s your most memorable New Jersey moment?

The “Snowball Game” Giants vs. Chargers in Giants Stadium 12/23/95…And finishing in 2nd place of the 2012 Borgata Fall Poker Open.

5). Now that New Jersey has joined Nevada, what’s your prediction for the future of online poker in the US?

It’s bright. I think there will be state by state agreements in the near future which will increase the player pools exponentially. I also believe that there will be many more casual players in the U.S than ever before as there is now no grey area with law as well as the deposit/cash out process will be a lot easier.
