Our amazing chairman Mike Sexton once famously said about Texas Hold’em that “it takes five minutes to learn but a lifetime to master” and he was correct.

Texas Hold’em is a great game, one you can learn the basics quickly, but also a game full of intricacies that separate recreational players from the very best poker players in the world.

If you are going to build a house, it is vitally important you lay some solid foundations otherwise you run the risk of the house tumbling down. Embarking on a poker career is similar: fail to lay some solid foundations and you will never reach your full potential as you’ll be basing your progress on a game littered with mistakes.

This is where the new, free MyGame comes in.

MyGame has been created by partypoker to help you improve your poker skills. Currently in Beta mode, MyGame is an interactive coach that you can use for Hold’em and Omaha cash games and multi-table tournaments. You can fire it up the free MyGame software while you’re in action at a table. It’s also available via the partypoker client where it opens in an internet browser. It is via MyGame where you download your hand histories to your computer.

How MyGame Works

MyGame is there to help you plug any leaks in your game. Imagine you had a major water leak in your home. It is going to cost you a lot of money in one fell swoop, but you’ll obviously notice the deluge of water invading your home so you can fix it immediately.

Now imagine you had a small leak in a water pipe somewhere in your home. This tiny leak could go undetected for years, allowing water to seep into the woodwork and brickwork of your home before it all comes, literally, crashing down. This tiny leak may not seem significant at the time, but it is much costlier in the long run.

This is also true in the poker world. A major, albeit unlikely leak, could be each time you make a Royal Flush, you fold it. This mistake is likely to cost you a full stack, but only once or twice a year because Royal Flushes are so rare.

But what if you were making a common mistake such as not stealing the blinds enough. You could make this mistake dozens of times during a typical cash game session, with each missed steal attempt costing you a couple of big blinds. Over the course of a year, this seemingly small mistake that goes under the radar will cost you far much more money than the glaring mistake previously explained.

MyGame Statistics

MyGame automatically monitors your play and prepares a report card for you so you can instantly see where you are going wrong, and areas of your game you are on the right track with. Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategy is used to determine your score and skill level.

The report card is available the day after your session and gives you a skill level based on five main categories:

  • Key Stats
  • Stealing and Blind Defence
  • 3 and 4 Betting
  • Post flop Aggression
  • Showdowns

These five categories can then be broken down into 25 specific aspects of your play, with hints and tips provided on how to improve this area. It’s vitally important to work at your game if you want to continue succeeding at the tables. Knowing what you’re doing well and not-so-well help you to focus your energy on improving the correct areas.

Determining Your MyGame Score

Your skill level is determined by your total aggregated score, with this score corresponding to one of the following levels:

Skill Level Score
Unranked
Rookie 0 to 40%
Social 40.01-50%
Intermediate 50.01-60%
Solid 60.01-70%
Advanced 70.01-80%
Pro 80.01-90%
Elite Pro 90.01%+

You will notice that you have some stars displayed on your skill level logo. The number of stars displayed corresponds to your experience; the more hands you play, the more stars you have. While MyGame begins reporting once you have played at least 100 hands, but is more accurate the more hands you play.

Experience Stars Hands required
0 Stars 100-249 hands
1 Star 250-999 hands
2 stars 1,000-4,999 hands
3 Stars 5,000-9,999 hands
4 Stars 10,000-24,999 hands
5 Stars 25,000+ hands

When you look at your report card, anything graded less than “A” will see you offered tailored hints and tips on how to improve this area of your game. Sometimes, you will also have the opportunity to take on a mission if a potential weakness is detected in your have. Once completed, you’ll be in a stronger position to address any other areas of your game highlighted in your MyGame report card.
