Countless songs by pop, country, rock, soul, and even heavy metal artists have found inspiration in the highs and lows of poker and gambling. These are some of our favourites to get you started on your own personal poker party soundtrack.
Note: Each song title links to a YouTube page where the song can be heard. Check ’em out!
1. “The Gambler”
The Gambler, written by Don Schlitz and performed by the legendary Country singer Kenny Rogers is the poker song. It’s full of poker and gambling advice that is relevant today despite being released in 1979. the classic line “You got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em” still has to be the quintessential poker couplet.
2. “Poker Face”
OK, so Lady Gaga’s Poker Face is really about the game of romance rather than the game of poker, the catchy refrain of “Can’t read my poker face” should still psych you up to win at the tables. Did you know that it was the best selling single of 2009 with over 9.5 million copies sold?
3. “Ace of Spades”
If you need a song to come through your headphones and give you an adrenaline boost then this is it. The Motorhead heavy metal classic about a die-hard gambler living on the edge will have your competitive juices flowing fast, plus you’ll never look at the ace of spades again without singing this song in your head!
4. “Luck Be a Lady”
Lady Luck can be fickle and it never hurts to plead with her to be on your side, whether you’re tossing dice like Sky Masterson in the 1955 movie musical Guys and Dolls, or playing online poker in your den.
5. “Gambler”
“I’m a gambler, and I will take you by surprise / Gambler, I’ll aim this straight between your eyes,” goes this 1984 song from the soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest. Sounds like a good mantra for any card player.
6. “Viva Las Vegas”
Bring some Vegas casino swagger right into your home with the classic paean to the glitz and glamour of Sin City. Written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, and performed by the legendary Elvis Presley, Viva Las Vegas was never sung live by “The King” but you can’t help singing it yourself when you pass through security at McCarran International Airport!
7. “Queen of Hearts”
Is playing with the queen of hearts not very smart, and the joker ain’t the only fool, sang Juice Newton in 1981. You can make up your own mind about that one.
8. “A Good Run of Bad Luck”
This song about playing fast and loose in craps and in love was featured on the soundtrack to the much-loved 1994 gambling movie Maverick. The accompanying music video was shot in an old western themed town with artist Clint Black and his band playing in a dark room with playing cards strewn across the floor.
9. “Losing Hand”
The oldest song on here is Ray Charles’ Losing Hand, which may be more about love than gambling, but gambling’s gambling, right? Bouncing back from a losing hand is easier when you’ve got some soulful inspiration to steel you for your next round.
10. “The Jack”
If there’s one thing AC/DC are capable of doing is literally turning anything into a double entendre, including a playing card!
