Learn the mental game of poker

Posted by Jesse May in Jesse May on May 5, 2011

Tilt-A-Whirl

Tilt. Steaming. Out of control, the bonkers monster. By any name, tilt is not a good thing for a poker player. And until now, it’s been mostly misunderstood.

In his new book, mental game coach Jared Tendler deconstructs tilt to its vital elements and provides a recipe for combating the plague.

This is no psychobabble, this is no man sitting on a leather couch in an ivory tower spewing transcendental waves. Tendler provides real steps and real answers for poker players involved in the day to day struggle who are too often beating themselves.

We all do it.  My entire poker career, in fact, has largely been based on seeking out people on tilt and sitting to their left.  There is no move so profitable in the poker world as being deep in a long game with a man over the edge. And on the other side of the coin there is nothing as costly in the long term as being that person who is throwing the party.

I remember some dark days in the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City as if they were yesterday, buried in my chair, up twenty-four hours straight and seething at a wrinkly faced live one who was making my life miserable.  And trying to convince myself that I had it all together.

I first encountered Jared Tendler a year ago, when he accompanied Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt to the Big Game IV in London. Even then, Jared’s reputation as a poker mind coach preceded him.

Originally meeting Dusty through the sport of golf, Jared took him from a keyboard smashing temper tantrumed tilt monster to one of the greatest grinders the game has ever known.

Jared soothes like a psychologist, soft spoken and good humored, and he raised his eyebrows as Dusty and I lost control over twenty-four straight hours in the commentary box, and murmured kind words when players lost it even worse at the table.

The book truly breaks the mental game of poker wide open for those willing to put the time in to read it.  I remember my excitement at first reading Sklansky on Hold’em in about 1990 and thinking the game would never be the same. Tilt is next, for this bible in the making. A bible of Tilt.
