{"id":43418,"date":"2017-02-03T09:07:40","date_gmt":"2017-02-03T08:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/blog\/en\/?p=43418"},"modified":"2021-06-23T11:57:28","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T11:57:28","slug":"john-duthie-interview-partypoker-live","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/blog\/en\/john-duthie-interview-partypoker-live.html","title":{"rendered":"John Duthie Interview: \u201cIt could get messy\u2026But it\u2019s going to be a lot of fun.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We sat down with our new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/en\/live\">partypoker LIVE<\/a> President, John Duthie, to talk about his preparations for the global tour, how he\u2019ll be using feedback from the poker community and why the partypoker players are his top priority.<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How has your past experience prepared you for the challenges of running partypoker LIVE?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>I think an understanding of players is the main thing. Being a player and knowing the players I\u2019ve sensed a level of dissatisfaction recently, meaning that all of us can try to make the playing experience more enjoyable. By listening, more than anything else.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>And when you listen, how will you be using poker community feedback in your new role?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Anything that any player has to say, I\u2019ll happily listen to. To be honest, I\u2019ve always listened to players. You can mould an event into something very successful with just good feedback. Listening, making changes and combining them with our own ideas can only be for the good.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>What excites you most about your new role and why did you decide to make your return to gaming with partypoker?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The challenge of the new role itself is exciting. What drew me to partypoker? Well, there\u2019s a gap in the market, no doubt about it. Worldwide poker events have been lacklustre and something needs to change or they\u2019ll fade into oblivion. We all have a duty to the game to make it more enjoyable. I think that the team at partypoker have shown that they\u2019re making inroads into making the game more enjoyable again; more so than anyone else.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s like throwing a party, really: You just need all the right ingredients.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>There are some pretty incredible stops planned for partypoker LIVE, are there any in particular that you\u2019re looking forward to?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Sochi I think is going to be very interesting. Just from looking at it and hearing about it I think it\u2019s going to be a very good event. Generally speaking, I think that in Russia they know how to enjoy themselves. As do poker players \u2013 they always bring a bottle to a party! Put those two together and it could get messy, but there\u2019s no doubt it will be great fun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>From a venue point of view it\u2019s going to be very exciting, as are the events at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playgroundpoker.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Playground\u00a0Poker Club<\/a> in Montreal, <a href=\"http:\/\/pokerroomkings.com\/index.php\/home-en.html\">King&#8217;s Casino<\/a> in Rozvadov and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dusktilldawncasinonottingham.com\">Dusk Till Dawn<\/a> in Nottingham, which are specifically designed around the poker player.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Will you be playing yourself during the tour?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Oh I suspect I\u2019ll play a bit, when I can.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How is partypoker LIVE going to be a truly unique playing experience and what will you be doing differently?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>This is where it really starts to get interesting; when you have three venues like Playground, Kings and DTD which are totally dedicated to poker and all run by people who love the game.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I think loving poker players is really fundamental. Some casinos don\u2019t really like poker players, they don\u2019t see them as being that much value to them. Whereas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/\">poker rooms<\/a> and venues make a completely different atmosphere.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s going to really show in the next year or two because it\u2019s going to be all about the game; all about the fun. That\u2019s a massive edge we have there.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You see, when you buy into a poker tournament, you\u2019re paying good money to play in the event. The organisers are running those tournaments on your behalf. Tournaments don\u2019t exist without players. So whoever is running a tournament needs to remember that they\u2019ve been given the privilege of running that tournament for the players. It\u2019s not about \u201cus and them\u201d; it\u2019s about the players allowing us to run it on their behalf.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We\u2019ve tried to think \u201cIf players were to get together and choose where they wanted to play, where would it be?\u201d And it would be in venues like Playground or DTD or King\u2019s.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Where do you see your plan to take the partypoker LIVE tour over the next few years? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Well, obviously it\u2019s already global! But the aim is to have huge player-friendly events with very, very large prize pools, large guarantees, good food, good staff and just fun. If you lose, you go away thinking \u201cactually I had a great time and I\u2019ll go back.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s more about the event and the experience than just the money. The number of times I used to go to events and, if I lost, I\u2019d still go away thinking I had a really good time. If you win it\u2019s a double-whammy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Going forward, it\u2019s going to be all about the experience and, most importantly, about respect for the players again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Thanks, John!
