{"id":36076,"date":"2014-09-04T09:30:18","date_gmt":"2014-09-04T08:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/blog\/en\/?p=36076"},"modified":"2019-10-31T12:28:08","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T12:28:08","slug":"mike-sexton-crucial-advice-for-navigating-early-stages-of-a-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.partypoker.com\/blog\/en\/mike-sexton-crucial-advice-for-navigating-early-stages-of-a-tournament.html","title":{"rendered":"Mike Sexton &#8211; Here&#8217;s My Crucial Advice For Navigating The Early Stages Of A Tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Grasp The Opportunity\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A wise man once said to me, <em><strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t feel bad about entering a tournament and busting out. \u00a0Feel bad about not entering and not giving yourself a chance to reach out and grab the brass ring.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0 I always loved that quote. \u00a0We&#8217;ve all heard the slogan, <em><strong>&#8216;You gotta be in it to win it.&#8217;<\/strong><\/em> \u00a0Well, sometimes, you just need to go for it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3 Quick Tips For Tourney Play<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For those who have never entered a big-time tourney like this, let me make a few suggestions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1st<\/strong>: After securing your entry &#8211; whether you buy in directly or win some type of satellite to get in (which I suggest you try) &#8211; be well rested, ready, and anxious to play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd:<\/strong>\u00a0Don&#8217;t be distracted by television, fussing around on the internet, phone calls, or family members.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3rd:<\/strong> Your focus on May 11th should be strictly on poker. \u00a0At least give yourself the best chance to be successful.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s Really Crucial Of Course Is&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s important for you to recognize that you can&#8217;t win a tournament in the first level or two, but you sure can lose it then.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Be Patient In The Early Levels. \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;ll have plenty of chips in proportion to the blinds so there&#8217;s no need to rush anything or take unnecessary chances in the early levels. \u00a0No good player would never want to &#8216;race&#8217; for all their chips early in a tournament. \u00a0Why? \u00a0Because the positive side of doubling up (with hundreds or thousands of players still left in the tourney) isn&#8217;t near the risk\/reward (i.e., disaster) of losing the race and being eliminated.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Get This Bit Right And Your Set.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In any tournament you ever play, you should always be aware of the chip counts of everyone at the table and study how the other players are playing &#8211; who are the loose\/aggressive players, who are the tight players, who defends their blinds, who doesn&#8217;t care about people stealing their blinds, who constantly 3-bets pre-flop, who always raises on the button, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Look I know this is all Poker 101, but certainly, paying attention and focusing at the table can not be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>Next up I&#8217;ll talk Middle Levels&#8230;Until then good luck qualifying!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Keep up to date with the all things partypoker!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get all the latest partypoker updates from your favourite social media outlets.
