When PartyPoker descended upon the World Poker Tour Canadian Spring Championship<\/a> a few days back I wanted to find out what our qualifiers best tips were for successful poker playing. Here’s what I got back.<\/p>\n

An Inside Job?<\/h3>\n

Turns out our friend really_eh has in. When I asked him how he got started in poker he told me well…<\/p>\n

“I first started playing about 20 years ago. I was a dealer at the time and at the time, limit poker was the only game around. I ended up as a poker supervisor\/manager at Fallsview Casino for 16 years. Over that time you see a lot of play, both good and bad and it was quite educational.”<\/p>\n

So can you tell us what you would consider to be your best advice?<\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>I think you must master pot and implied odds.
\n2. <\/strong>Know that a bad fold is better than a bad call, and use a HUD.
\n3. <\/strong>Never give the fish crap for playing a bad hand. We need them to keep on playing!
\n4. <\/strong>Most of all, emotional control is the key to winning.<\/p>\n

Right now I would just call myself a good amateur. I have qualified for the last two WPT events back to back with Party Poker!<\/p>\n

Don’t go breakin’ busterlover heart<\/h3>\n

Busterlover is a a 2 time first round draftpick in the MLB baseball draft and asked if I could arrange for Kara Scott to be seated at his table. Now I had that out of the way I figured he must know something or two and what his best tips were:<\/p>\n

5.<\/strong>Get a monitor
\n6.<\/strong>Be well rested
\n7.<\/strong>Pay attention
\n8.<\/strong>Wear a lucky hat
\n9.<\/strong>Listen to your favorite music<\/p>\n

Splice42 a big sci-fi fan couldn’t remember exactly when he started playing poker only it was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….okay the galaxy bit I added for effect, but the tips are all his:<\/p>\n

10.<\/strong>Position,
\n11.<\/strong>Position,
\n12.<\/strong>Position. Those are the 3 most important right there!
\n13.<\/strong>Manage your bankroll properly: don’t play with money you can’t afford to lose, and play limits and buyins that are a small fraction of your total bankroll (5% or less).
\n14.<\/strong>Finally, focus on making good decisions and don’t be results-oriented. If you make good decisions, over time you will get the money.<\/p>\n

15.<\/strong>Start small stakes and work your way up
\n16.<\/strong>Play consistent no matter the stakes
\n17.<\/strong>Learn from your mistakes
\n18.<\/strong>Be professional and not derogatory to other players
\n19.<\/strong>Watch and read as much poker books and videos as you can
\n20.<\/strong>Try different plays and see what works best for you.<\/p>\n
