Matthew is living proof that by continually improving your skillset eventually yields results in the poker world.

Like many, the Goods In Supervisor from Worcestershire, United Kingdom, discovered poker through Late Night Poker, a televised poker show formerly broadcast in the UK.

“I first had my eyes opened to poker many years ago when I discovered Late Night Poker that used to be shown on Channel 4. I ws instantly hooked watching the likes of “Devilfish,” Ram Vaswani, and Phil Hellmuth do their thing, and felt and urge to want to learn the game. Then I discovered you could play for money online, which was handy seeing as this was just before the poker boom and not many people I knew played the game.”

Initial Success Followed By Some Time Away From the Game

Matthew enjoyed some initial success, bagging a few four-figure scores and qualifying for some live events in the UK, including a few final tables at Dusk Till Dawn. Poker took something of a backseat for several years, but Matthew came back to the game in 2020.

“I took a step back from poker to pursue music for a few years with my old band, but still played online a little when I had the time, in addition to sporadically playing some live events when I wasn’t gigging. Then I became a father in 2014 and eventually came back to poker in 2020.”

Poker is a game that continually evolves and the strategies of yesteryear quickly become void. Matthew found this out when he delved back into playing online poker.

“My first year back wasn’t particularly successful. I noticed a big change in the way players were approaching the game and knew I needed to learn and adapt if I wanted to take the game more seriously. I’m a big believer that if you want something bad enough you have to earn it, so I wiped the slate clean, invested in a modern poker theory book, some online content for studying, and watching the partypoker pro Twitch streamers to soak up as much information as possible. I hit the micro-stakes tables and tried working my way up.”

Matthew Cox

Study More + Play More = Winning

All that studying plus increasing his volume, saw the following year begin to bear fruit for Matthew.

“Last year was much better and I put in 200,000 hands. To name a few, I won the first ever partypoker League, The Flash, final table bubbled a WPT Pot-Limit Omaha event, and won a bunch of the pros’ homegames too. I think Matthew Staples’ homegame is the only one I’ve not won yet.”

“Results aside, consistency is the key for me. That’s where I find MyGame helpful as it enables you to pinpoint weaker areas of your game to work on either while you’re in a session or to look back over the past week or month. I’ve been hitting an average score of 80-82% for six months now, which I’m pleased with but know I’ve barely scratched the surface with what else there is to learn; and there is a lot of room for improvement. Improving is what I continually strive to do.”

Matthew didn’t have the best start to the current year thanks to enduring a downswing as 2022 kicked off. However, he did not grow disheartened and realised that despite making a few mistakes as we all do, it was basically variance not being on his side that was preventing him from winning.

Taking Out The Terminator

All that changed when he took down The Terminator one Tuesday evening. He added a few more points to his tally and discovered he had become a Legend of the Week when a $530 ticket landed in his partypoker account.

“The Daily Legends schedule is great for a 9-to-5er like myself. There are buy-ins to suit every bankroll, the tournaments finish at reasonable times, and they are all round great value tournaments for the casual player, enthusiasts, and pros alike.”

“Aside from the Daily Legends, the various series that run on partypoker are great. I like the longer structured two-day events. I think my favourite would be the WPT series, if only for the prestige that the WPT name brings with it. ”

Unsurprisingly for a man who strives for improvement, becoming a better poker player and person is high on Matthew’s agenda for the remaining eight months of the year.

“My main goals for 2022 are to keep being committed to improving and being consistent in making good decisions, bankroll management, study regularly, exercise more, eat better and drink less. All of this should help me become a better player and person, and hopefully work my way up the stakes.”

“it would be great to take down a huge tournament, and I have a shot with my recently acquired ticket – one time! The ultimate goal, as with most serious poker players, is to be able to play professionally for a living. But I’m realistic about where I’m at and will keep battling away and see what the future brings. Win or lose, I love the game.”

Love poker?
