In 1983 Englishman Geoff Capes became the first non-American to be crowned World's Strongest Man. Scandinavian athletes dominated the 1980s and 1990s, with Icelanders Jon-Pall Sigmarsson and Magnus ver Magnusson notching up four wins each while Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish competitors taking five other titles from 1984 to 1999.
Today, the balance of power has clearly shifted to Eastern Europe, Mariusz Pudzianowski of Poland was victorious in 2002 and 2003 before being dethroned by the Ukraine's Vasyl Virastyuk in 2004. The Polish strongman returned to the top in 2005, becoming the fourth man to win three or more championships. In 2006, Phil Pfister became the first American to win the title since Kazmaier in 1982.
Pudzianowski came back strong in 2007, winning for a fourth time, before triumphing in an epic competition in 2008 to take a record-breaking fifth title.
It’s a tough record to beat, but the World’s Strongest Man has always been about doing the impossible.
