The field, made up of up-and-coming fighters as well as seasoned veterans, pair up and fight in for quarter-finals of three four-minute rounds. The winners move on to the semis and ultimately to the final.
All fights are held in one action-packed evening of boxing, with fan flocking back to arenas to watch exciting bouts with knockouts galore.
With each boxer facing a maximum of nine rounds and three fights in one night, the event is fast and furious with the winner collecting £25,000.
The first-ever Prizefighter tournament – The Heavyweights - was staged on Friday, 11th April at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, East London, the spiritual home of boxing.
Belfast's Martin Rogan won a thrilling final with a points victory over David Dolan after three frantic rounds. The fight was so good that the crowd give both boxers a standing ovation at the end. In fact, such was the camaraderie on display that the event received the sportsmanship award at the 2008 British Boxing Board of Control Annual Awards.
The format proved hugely popular with the viewing public: Sky Sports received their highest boxing rating for the entire year. There were more heavyweights at the next Prizefighter event in Newcastle, where Sam Sexton triumphed. Similar events were also staged at welterweight and middleweight, with Michael Lomax and Martin Murray winning respectively. The most recent heavyweight event was won by Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison.
Similar nights will also be held at other weight divisions including light-heavyweight and lightweight, featuring more of the best new British talent.
The PartyPoker.com Prizefighter is set to revitalize boxing in the same way Twenty20 has breathed new life into cricket. It’s brought the sport to a whole new audience and is quickly gaining a reputation as the most thrilling boxing format.
