The WPT Main Event is done and dusted and we’ve had our High Roller Champion as well.
It has been fantastic to be back in the UK but I do feel as though I’ve hit the ground running!
The day before we began filming the final table for the World Poker Tour Main Event, I hit Leicester Square for Poker In The Park to hear my friend, poker broadcaster Nick Wealthall do his seminar on ‘how to lose in poker.’
The talk was as funny as that title makes it sound but also really interesting as he discussed how bad humans are at losing.
We’re trained to hate losing and generally we stop doing things if we’re punished with failure again and again. When playing poker, we need to get over this because if we let bad beats and losing affect our state of mind, we’ll never be able to reach our potential in the game.
I managed to catch up with some friends there as well and bumped into the lovely Lisa Marie Long who also works as a poker presenter and is a good friend of mine. After a fabulous curry at our favourite spot here in London, I hit my bed nice and early to help deal with the jet lag and prepare for the busy days ahead.
The WPT Final Table was a stormer and I’ve heard Jesse May and Mike Sexton (who commentated on the WPT here in London) both say that it was some of the best WPT final table action that they’d seen.
We finished up at a relatively decent hour and I was back in my hotel bed by 2am – result! Yesterday was a wee bit longer…. we started the day at noon and after 8 hours we STILL hadn’t lost a player from the High Roller Final. When we finally did crown our champion, it was 5am and everyone was dropping dead on their feet.
I was back up again at 9am to get ready for the Party Poker World Open’s first televised heat today. That makes a grand total of 17 hours at work followed by 3 and a half hours of sleep and then I bounced back out of bed (I lie, I crawled out of bed cursing and swearing at my alarm clock) to arrive here this morning for another 14 hours of TV magic.
Today’s morning heat is probably going to be one of my favourites of the series as there are a lot of players on it that I really like. The British contingent of James Akenhead, Sam Trickett, Neil Channing and Ian Frazer along with the Irish Marty Smyth are right now talking up a storm on their table. It won’t be quiet, that’s for sure!
