Tilt. Steaming. Out of control, the bonkers monster. By any name, tilt is not a good thing for a poker player. And until now, it’s been mostly misunderstood.

In his new book, mental game coach Jared Tendler deconstructs tilt to its vital elements and provides a recipe for combating the plague.

This is no psychobabble, this is no man sitting on a leather couch in an ivory tower spewing transcendental waves. Tendler provides real steps and real answers for poker players involved in the day to day struggle who are too often beating themselves.

We all do it. My entire poker career, in fact, has largely been based on seeking out people on tilt and sitting to their left. There is no move so profitable in the poker world as being deep in a long game with a man over the edge. And on the other side of the coin there is nothing as costly in the long term as being that person who is throwing the party.

I remember some dark days in the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City as if they were yesterday, buried in my chair, up twenty-four hours straight and seething at a wrinkly faced live one who was making my life miserable. And trying to convince myself that I had it all together.

I first encountered Jared Tendler a year ago, when he accompanied Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt to the Big Game IV in London. Even then, Jared’s reputation as a poker mind coach preceded him.

Originally meeting Dusty through the sport of golf, Jared took him from a keyboard smashing temper tantrumed tilt monster to one of the greatest grinders the game has ever known.

Jared soothes like a psychologist, soft spoken and good humored, and he raised his eyebrows as Dusty and I lost control over twenty-four straight hours in the commentary box, and murmured kind words when players lost it even worse at the table.

The book truly breaks the mental game of poker wide open for those willing to put the time in to read it. I remember my excitement at first reading Sklansky on Hold’em in about 1990 and thinking the game would never be the same. Tilt is next, for this bible in the making. A bible of Tilt.

Paris is, after all, the city that made him famous, where at his first WPT final table Howard Lederer refused to shake his hand and at his second final table the world recoiled in horror.

Paris is where Tony refuses to stay anywhere but at the palace called the George V. It’s where he gives a 1000 euro tip to a waiter.

The town where fuelled by countless bottles of wine he rushes back up onstage at the European Poker Awards and declares that he has to say just one more thing.

I caught up with Tony G at the café, at the George V, at the European Poker Awards, and at the Aviation Club. I followed him deep into the night. I hung on his every word, because you think maybe, just once, he’ll break character and reveal the real Tony G.

But maybe what you see is what you get. The real Tony G has a problem with Putin, wants a rematch with Isildur, has disdain for French poker, and is generous beyond belief. Paris is the one city big enough to accommodate the real Tony G. Bring on more Russians.

But that’s why we love him. There have only been two people in the history of the world who treated all people the exact same way.

There was the Buddha, who treated every man with humility and kindness. And there is Phil Hellmuth, who treats every human being as if they already know that he is the greatest poker player in the world. Hellmuth never breaks character. And so yesterday when he shook the hand of George W. Bush, he gave the former president a book and an autographed beer can.

I’m not joking. And neither is Phil. And that’s why that even though George W. Bush shook hands yesterday with twelve governors, nineteen senators, and eight billionaire captains of industry, the one thing he learned for sure is how many WSOP bracelets Phil has won.

When I managed to catch up with him yesterday, Phil Hellmuth was in flying form. Darting between the presidential library and the Superbowl, dinner with Hilary Swank and ditching Michael Phelps, talking Dancing with the Stars and charity work in Uganda. But he’s still just that twenty-four year old kid from Madison, Wisconsin. And he gave me a blow by blow account of his day with GW. Breathless.

Wow! I have just opened a Twitter account and who do I follow first and what do I see? This picture of Phil Hellmuth with George W. Bush. The Poker Brat in a leather jacket and cap (no iPod on though?) at the opening of the Presidential Library. It’s easy to get an invite anywhere these days isn’t it?

Is it just me or do you get the impression this is just Hellmuth going ‘can i have a picture taken with you’ Devilfish style then claim they you are best mates? Yeah Phil, Bush wanted to talk about all your bracelets and advise you on a new sponsorship deal? Is that what we are going to hear next? Did you talk to him about your life coach and how all the young kids are overtaking you?

I’m guessing your friends Michael Phelps, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Hilary Swank were there too? You should really let us know when you meet famous people – there is no need to be so humble.

Anyway, to celebrate the opening of my new Twitter account I am offering you $100 of my own money for the best caption to this photo.

On a separate note I also hear Phil is going on Dancing With The Stars and am willing to place a huge wager on him going out first.
I want charity to benefit just like it did when some Scottish zillionaire outbid me for Zasko Eastgate’s bracelet.
UPDATE: The winner is Ziga Zorko with “P.H.: Has anyone seen my bike?”.

Phil Hellmuth had arrived

And then the clarinet player was off, marching in line with a septuagenarian cymbal player on his left as they travelled back and forth between a London double decker bus and the entrance to the Empire Casino smack dab in the center of Leicester Square.

Eleven Lady Gaga lookalikes stood facing the other way, shimmying their wares and swivelling their hips. Phil Hellmuth had arrived to the World Series of Poker Europe.

Viktor Blom is not that small. He’s tall and lanky, even while seated. The blonde hair cascades down both sides of his face and it’ll be some years before he can shave, if ever. He’s on the stage at a table in the two seat and just about every eye in the room is upon him, because he might be Isildur. He’s the chipleader in the main event of the WSOPE with 83 left, or so they say.

Viktor Blom is being watched

Tall towers of red five thousand chips are stacked awkwardly, haphazardly, unevenly, as Viktor shifts a bit uncomfortably in his chair. No hat, no sunglasses, and you wonder about what he cares. I get the feeling that when he’s playing poker, that’s his fun. He leans over and asks a question to the man sitting three seats to his left, Irish Open Champion James Mitchell, then puts in a reraise from the small blind.

Mitchell quickly passes. He ain’t messing with Isildur. A guy with a camera has sat down in the eight seat. I mean actually taken a seat at the table with a huge damn television camera and pointed it straight at Viktor Blom.

Three guys carrying point and shoots are jostling around behind the dealer. One man with a walkie talkie is standing behind Blom and shouting nonsense into it. Blom just sits there, smiling with a half smirk that bears no malice, idly shuffling seven chips not very well. I guess he better get used to being watched. Apparently, he is already.

I’ve seen the inside of the Palm Beach Casino, I’ve seen the inside of the Tube and a couple of cabs. I’ve seen the inside of the commentary box and my pillow before it hits my head. And I’ve seen hundreds of hands of poker.

What a great week. Last night it was a carnival inside the Palm Beach in London, with John Tabatabai holding court and Phil Laak in flying form.

Psychic powers of the cards

Since his extreme sports snowmobiling accident, Laak has been a different man. He’s got a red Mohawk, red sunglasses, a Union Jack cast where his arm used to be, and psychic powers of the cards.

Sorel Mizzi has postulated that Laak is like John Travolta from the movie Phenomenon, where hitting his head has caused him to take on supernatural powers. He doesn’t yet speak Portuguese, but running a Mississippi slide bluff against Huck Seed and losing only one blind with the queens against the kings are well within his reach.

Another guy who’s holding court in the land of the Gods is John Duthie, Mr. Big. He played three of the sickest hands I’ve ever seen, like Stu Ungar in his full flung prime. I had the pleasure of watching his post Modern expressionist style of poker with James Akenhead and Pras Bansi.

We had a great day out, highlighted by one of the most interesting hands I have seen in a while. You could see it coming. And you could throw logic out the window. When British young gun John Eames did what any expert would have done, you just knew Duthie was going to wrap him up. And Akenhead and Bansi also saw it coming. It pays to be one step ahead of the curve. Picasso was.

There are spectators scattered throughout, but midway through the center of the room they are four deep on the rail with a camera crew and boom mike hovering.

Nine no-names at the table but no one cares because in the six seat sits Tom “durrrr” Dwan. I arrive over as he calls an under the gun raise from middle position.

Dwan has got about 32k from a 30k starting stack, a marked improvement from the 18k or so he was down to earlier, according to his Twitter feed.

Something to do with a prop bet that Tom Dwan won or lost

Tom wears a black warm-up jacket and a grey smiley face t-shirt, both thick with sponsor patches, plus an oversized button with a picture of a poker player named Peter Jetten hugging a koala bear that has something to do with a prop bet that Tom Dwan won or lost.

Tom “Durrrr” Dwan has a lot of prop bets. He wears an iPod and rests the side of his head on his palm. His eyelids look heavy and down low, confirmation of the manic nature of his last six weeks. It’s been a busy WSOP for Durrrr, and it’s nearing the end.

If reports are true, Dwan stood to make in the region of 12 million dollars on top of the prize money should he grab a bracelet in 2010, and damn didn’t he get close. When he got heads up in a no limit event after wading through three thousand people, the big names stewing themselves on the rail spoke to the fact that he had the entire high stakes poker community by the shorts.

He let me accompany him to his trailer for an interview

Alas it was not to be that night, but Durrrr didn’t seem a bit ruffled by the result. His character is nothing but Mr. Cool to the extreme, a guy who prides himself on playing perfect poker no matter the stakes, the hours, the game, or his results.

On a break, he let me accompany him to his trailer for an interview. Out the back door, a few RV’s are parked in the lot, like the headliners for a rock concert. Dwan, Negreanu, Ivey. They are the stars and we are the groupies.

Inside the truck Dwan is friendly, candid, and easygoing, belaying none of the stress of this Vegas marathon. As usual, I hang on his every word. He has no problem summing up his last two months with one sentence and his patented wry smile. “It would have been a lot more fun if I had won, man, it would have been a lot more fun if I had won….”
